چکیده

The Visible-Infrared SASE Amplifier (VISA) undulator is an in-vacuum, 4-meter long, 1.8 cm period, purepermanent magnet device, with a novel, strong focusing, permanent magnet FODO array included within the fixed, 6 mm undulator gap. The undulator magnet is constructed of 99-cm long segments, joined into a continuous structure. To attain maximum SASE gain requires establishing overlap of electron and photon beams to within 50 microns rms. This imposes challenging tolerances on mechanical fabrication and magnetic field quality, and necessitates use of laser straightness interferometry for calibration and alignment of the magnetic axes of the undulator segments. This paper describes the computerized magnet sorting, pulsed-wire magnetic measurements, trajectory shimming and magnetic axis calibration performed to meet this goal.

SASE FEL Saturation Characterization at the ATF

After successful completion of the High Gain Harmonic Generation (HGHG) free electron laser (FEL) experiment [1,2] at the Accelerator Test Facility (ATF), R&D toward future light sources at the NSLS achieved another milestone on March 17, 2001 when the visible-infrared self-amplified spontaneous emission amplifier (VISA) experiment at the ATF achieved saturation. The VISA Self Amplified Spontan...

Mechanical Design of the Visa Undulator

As part of the research and development effort for a 4th generation light source, we have designed a 4-meter long Free-Electron Laser (FEL) undulator. The undulator will be installed at the Accelerator Test Facility (ATF) at Brookhaven National Laboratory to conduct a SelfAmplified Spontaneous Emission (SASE) demonstration. The demonstration is called VISA, which stands for “Visible to Infrared...

Initial Gain Measurements of a 800nm SASE FEL, VISA

The VISA (Visible to Infrared SASE Amplifier) FEL is designed to obtain high gain at a radiation wavelength of 800nm. The FEL uses the high brightness electron beam of the Accelerator Test Facility (ATF), with energy of 72MeV. VISA uses a novel, 4 m long, strong focussing undulator with a gap of 6mm and a period of 1.8cm. To obtain large gain the beam and undulator axis have to be aligned to be...

Visa Ib: Ultra-high Bandwidth, High Gain Sase Fel

We report the results of a high energy spread SASE FEL experiment, the intermediary experiment linking the VISA I and VISA II projects. A highly chirped beam (1.7 %) was transported, without corrections of longitudinal aberrations in the ATF dogleg, and injected into the VISA undulator. The ouput radiation displayed an uncharacteristicly large bandwidth (12 %) with extremely stable lasing and m...
